Implementation of cloud retrievals for Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) atmospheric retrievals: part 1. Description and characterization of errors on trace gas retrievals

چکیده
[1] We develop an approach to estimate and characterize trace gas retrievals in the presence of clouds in high spectral measurements of upwelling radiance in the infrared spectral region (650–2260 cm ). The radiance contribution of clouds is parameterized in terms of a set of frequency-dependent nonscattering optical depths and a cloud height. These cloud parameters are retrieved jointly with surface temperature, emissivity, atmospheric temperature, and trace gases such as ozone from spectral data. We demonstrate the application of this approach using data from the Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) and test data simulated with a scattering radiative transfer model. We show the value of this approach in that it results in accurate estimates of errors for trace gas retrievals, and the retrieved values improve over the initial guess for a wide range of cloud conditions. Comparisons are made between TES retrievals of ozone, temperature, and water to model fields from the Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO), temperature retrievals from the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS), tropospheric ozone columns from the Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS) GEOS-Chem, and ozone retrievals from the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS). In each of these cases, this cloud retrieval approach does not introduce observable biases into TES retrievals.

Implementation of cloud retrievals for TES atmospheric retrievals: 2. Characterization of cloud top pressure and effective optical depth retrievals
[1] We characterize and validate the cloud products from the Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) by comparing TES estimates of effective cloud optical depth and cloud top height to those from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (on EOS) (MODIS), the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS), and to simulated data. TES measures in the infrared spectral region (650–2260 cm ), where c...
متن کاملPredicted errors of tropospheric emission spectrometer nadir retrievals from spectral window selection
[1] Error covariances and vertical resolutions are reported for Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) nadir-view retrievals of surface temperature, atmospheric temperature, H2O, O3, CO, and CH4. These error covariances are computed as a result of selecting spectral windows that maximize the information content of simulated, TES nadir-view atmospheric retrievals of four regions representative...
متن کاملCapturing time and vertical variability of tropospheric ozone: A study using TES nadir retrievals
[1] In this paper, the vertical resolution for Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) nadir ozone retrievals is established and is used to assess the ability of TES to capture time variations of ozone in the troposphere. This characterization is based on retrievals of ozone using simulated radiances generated from ozonesonde profiles taken over Bermuda from 14 April to 25 May 1993. To that en...
متن کاملImproved tropospheric ozone profile retrievals using OMI and TES radiances
[1] We perform a study for characterizing the vertical resolution of tropospheric ozone profile retrievals from the combination of simulated ultraviolet (UV) and thermal infrared (TIR) observations that are representative of the EOS Aura Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) and the Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES). Under the low thermal contrast conditions used for this simulation, we find...
متن کاملCharacterization of Aura TES carbonyl sulfide retrievals over ocean
We present a description of the NASA Aura Tropospheric Emission Spectrometer (TES) carbonyl sulfide (OCS) retrieval algorithm for oceanic observations, along with evaluation of the biases and uncertainties using aircraft profiles from the HIPPO (HIAPER Pole-to-Pole Observations) campaign and data from the NOAA Mauna Loa site. In general, the OCS retrievals (1) have less than 1.0 degree of freed...
